Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte announced that all mortgages securitized by the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, will now disclose a VantageScore 4.0 credit score in addition to a legacy score, effective immediately. This follows Director Pulte’s recent directive that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can now accept VantageScore 4.0 credit scores from all mortgage origination lenders. VantageScore 4.0 is the most advanced credit score in the mortgage market today, providing lenders with superior risk prediction and cost savings opportunities. From May 1, 2026, to August 31, 2026, VantageScore 4.0 was used to securitize approximately 9% of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages.
The FHFA is leading the charge in bringing the mortgage industry into a modern era,” said Anthony Hutchinson, EVP and Head of Public Affairs at VantageScore. “The disclosure of VantageScore 4.0 scores to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac investors will rapidly accelerate VantageScore adoption in the capital markets and mortgage markets alike, giving market participants access to the most modern and innovative credit model.

VantageScore 4.0 Responsibly Expands the Mortgage Market by Identifying More Qualified Borrowers for Homeownership: VantageScore 4.0 scores approximately 33 million more U.S. adults than FICO Classic or FICO 10T, including nearly 5 million additional mortgage-ready consumers. Among these are approximately 24 million dormant-file consumers, 77% of whom score Near Prime or Prime, revealing a significant population of experienced borrowers overlooked by legacy scoring models.
VantageScore 4.0 Implementation Unlocks Nearly $1 Billion in Annual Cost Savings Across the Mortgage Market: A recent independent study by Deep Future Analytics shows that the FHFA’s approval of VantageScore 4.0 for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages saves over $930 million in the first year.
VantageScore 4.0 Trusted by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to Highlight Collateral Performance in GSE Residential Backed Mortgage Securities: Since May 1, 2026, several of the largest mortgage lenders and mortgage industry participants have rapidly moved to adopt VantageScore 4.0 for mortgages, including the top two mortgage originators, Rocket Mortgage and United Wholesale Mortgage, along with the Federal Home Loan Banks, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
VantageScore 4.0 gives lenders a more modern and predictive view of consumer credit risk, helping them responsibly identify qualified borrowers who may be overlooked by traditional credit scoring models. Don’t get left behind - explore piloting VantageScore 4.0
