On Tuesday, November 9 at 2pm EST, VantageScore's Dr. Emre Sahingur, Senior Vice President for Predictive Analytics, Research and Product Management, will be presenting the Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) webinar "Alternative Data: What Benefits Can Rent, Utility and Telecom Payments Provide Consumers, and What Are the Challenges Associated with Using This Data?"

Increasing financial inclusion and equity is a key area of focus in the financial services industry, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic which exacerbated the economic gaps faced by many communities.

Minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged consumers in particular tend to have more limited credit activity reported on their credit files, which exacerbates challenges for these consumers in accessing credit. How can the industry provide better products and services to these underserved consumers by using more alternative data like rent, utility and telecom payments in assessing their creditworthiness? And how can we improve the coverage and standardization of this data?

Dr. Emre Sahingur will share insights from recent research that examines how bringing in data on consumers’ experiences with rent, utility and telecom accounts may impact consumer credit scores based on a variety of profiles from those with thin files to those with damaged credit histories.

  1. Discuss how the use of rent, utility and telecom data can support efforts to improve financial inclusion
  2. Analyze how scores are impacted when these accounts are added to a consumer’s credit file
  3. Examine which profiles of consumers are most positively impacted by this data
  4. Discuss current reporting practices and opportunities for how to best harness the reporting of this data in a way that provides the best benefits for consumers and lenders
